Work Permit Policy
Many students seek to enter the work force for various reasons during their high school years. Child Labor Laws dictate that any student under the age of 18 with a job must have a work permit.
Work permits are issued based on a student’s attendance and academic standing. Students are allowed to obtain work permits if they have demonstrated good behavior and responsibility. There are two types of work permits issued at MECHS - General work permits and Probationary work permits. The requirements to obtain a work permit are as follows:
General Work Permit
1) Students must have good attendance (95% or higher) – no unexcused absences, excessive tardies, or period absences
2) Students must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher
3) Students must have a job offer.
If a student meets the requirements listed above, a general work permit will be issued for the quarter (or remaining portion thereof), and may be renewed quarterly as long as the student remains in good standing. However, if the student does not meet the requirements, a work permit may be issued under the provisions stated below.
Probationary Work Permit
A probationary work permit may be issued for one progress report period with the condition that the student attends daily (no unexcused absences, no excessive tardies, no period absences), and improves their grades to 'C' or better during that time frame. A general work permit may be issued once the student is in good standing.
